Ponca City gets its name from the Indian term for "sacred leader." It was created in true Oklahoma fashion during the Cherokee Strip land rush of the late 1800s. On September 16, 1893, homesteaders lined up for a race to claim one of the 160-acre farm sites in the area surrounding what became Ponca City.
One ambitious settler by the name of B.S. Barnes sold his furniture factory in Michigan, staked claims here and sold lots for $2 each. Even though Ponca City began with the 1893 land run, it was the roaring '20s that really brought the town to life. Later the oil wells roared into existence and with it again came the sweet jingle of success. Ponca City is a central location.
